You can also go-out-for-a-beer and not order an alcoholic drink. I've never met anyone who had a problem with someone for ordering a soda, especially if you say you don't drink. Go-out-for-a-beer can be any social event just to see if you'll get along with a team easily, or if it will be too much of a culture difference.

Where I work, when we interview someone on-site the team they'll be working with takes the person out for lunch somewhere and spends an hour or two getting to know them.
